Meet Andre Williams, 2017 Graduate

Former graduate Andre Williams now works at America's Catch, a local company and faithful supporter of Delta Streets Academy! We are incredibly proud of Andre and his hard work ethic!

“I graduated from Delta Streets Academy in 2017 and now work at America’s Catch as a truck driver,” said Andre Williams. “While I was at DSA, Mr. McCray had the biggest impact on me because I had to adjust to his way of teaching at first and I really grew to love the subject.”

Andre continued, “DSA prepared me for life by teaching me to always give my best effort at everything that I attempt to do, and that if l really wanted to do something in life, I’m the only one who can stop me.”

“Andre Williams is an outstanding Over the Road Truck (OTR) Driver for America’s Catch, Inc. Andre has worked diligently to ensure America’s Catch products are delivered safely and in a timely manner.  America’s Catch is appreciative of the faculty and staff of Delta Streets Academy for providing Andre and countless other young men a quality education and for teaching the skills required to be successful in life. Andre is a very respectful young man and a vital part of our OTR team.” -Solon Scott, President of America’s Catch
Meet Jonathan Albright, Head Basketball Coach, Assistant Football Coach & Teacher

Describe your job at DSA: I’m the Head Basketball Coach and Assistant Football Coach, and I teach Math, Reading, and ACT Prep.

How did you hear about DSA? I’m originally from Terry, MS and had never been to Greenwood or heard of Delta Streets before July. I interviewed mid-July and moved to Greenwood at the end of the month.

How do you encourage your athletes in their character development? Our motto for the year is “every moment matters” – everything you do matters whether in the classroom or on the court. You are always a leader, whether you want to be or not, so your influence can either be positive or negative.

What is the most challenging part of your job? The balance of knowing when to discipline and when to give grace. I want the guys to know that I love them and care about them first. They react to things differently when they know you care about them.

Tell us about the new gymnasium. Our guys are so excited! We had a lock-in this past weekend, where they ate pizza and watched a movie.
Being just one week away from the Grand Opening of the new gym, to say I am excited is an understatement! We have multiple opportunities to use the gym for Delta Streets programs: basketball practice and games, morning devotionals, pep rallies, PE activities, and so on. And I’m excited about our community taking advantage of the new space. Starting in December, DSA will host a city-wide basketball league for 9–12-year-olds.

The students, especially the basketball players, are pumped and ready to play home games. I recently did an interview with the local paper, and the reporter asked if ten years ago, I could imagine sitting in a nice gym that belonged to DSA, and my answer was no. I imagined sitting in classrooms and a cafeteria but would have said that playing in churches and other schools’ gyms would be our reality for years to come. I don't want to trivialize God's grace and mercy, but He has shown DSA amazing grace and mercy with the gym project. I can specifically remember my conversation two years ago with the generous donor in Dallas who committed the $1M gift to start this whole process. I told him that in the next five years, we may only have 75 students, and he said, "If you are implementing your mission statement and operating the same way I saw when I visited, it is one of the best ways my family and I can spend the money."

God's grace and mercy on full display! We don't deserve a super nice gym, but we sure are thankful for those individuals who gave to make it a reality and praising God for putting it on their hearts!
