We're highlighting two athletes who have exceeded expectations and helped promote DSA's competitive athletic environment!
Meet Dameon Sanders, Senior Basketball star who scored over 1,000 points in his career!

What have you learned from Coach Holland? Coach Holland showed me that it's more to life than just basketball or any sport. He taught me that everyone needs God. You can't achieve what you want or anything else wouldn't matter as much unless you have trust in God. Coach Holland brought be closer to God not just by being my coach, but by being a mentor and helping guide me in the correct direction. I've also learned that you can't get through all your problems on your own and you don't need to deal with it on your own. Everyone needs to understand that there are people around that love you for more than what you can do, but for who you are as a person.

What did you enjoy about your team? This basketball season I really enjoyed watching the underclass men grow. I've played with most of them since they arrived here. I love each and every last one of them like my brothers and I want them to continue growing and being the best they can be.

What will you miss when you graduate? I'll miss everything about DSA besides the mark system. I'll mostly miss Ms. Glass. Ms. Glass is like a mother on campus. She's always there for you whenever you need anything. She made the last of my years easier for me here at DSA and I appreciate everything she's done for me.
Meet Derek Lopez, 8th grader who grew tremendously this soccer season!

What have you learned from Coach Altman? I learned better positioning and passing more accurately.

How do you think you improved this season? I improved by practicing and listening to coach.

Describe what you enjoy about the team & your favorite game. I enjoyed the soccer team because I learned new things from them and we get along well. My favorite game was Riverside because that’s when I scored my first varsity goal.
Soccer Recap from Head Coach Connor Altman

This year’s soccer season was less impressive than in years past; however, there were many things worth celebrating along the way! We had three seniors this year - Cristian Ledesma, Joseph Zuniga and Danny Vargas, who were all multi-year starters and impactful leaders on this team. Together they led us to the success that we have achieved in years past, as well as helping bring about young players who will be very exciting to watch in the years to come!

Amongst the young players, Derek Lopez and Jona Jimenez are two guys who really stepped up big for us. Derek is an 8th grader and Jona is a 9th grader, and both of these lads demonstrated a profound desire and hunger to perform well beyond what is typically expected of younger players! It’s a treat to get to coach guys this advanced at such a young age!

Another highlight for us this year, and one that I am especially excited about, is the fact that our Junior Varsity team finished 2nd in the district with wins over Pillow Academy, St. Aloysius, and a draw with Bayou Academy. Our guys get fired up any chance that we get to compete against Pillow, so beating them twice in one year at the Junior Varsity level is something that is very much worth celebrating!

While Delta Streets Academy’s soccer season looked different than maybe what we, as a team, had envisioned for ourselves, there was not a moment of it that was spent languishing in self-pity or apathy! It is my goal day after day to help these young men come to understand that the best thing about the fight is the fight itself! Regardless of the outcome when it’s all said and done, a man is recognized by the amount and the effort with which he is willing to work!

Basketball Recap from Head Coach Jonathan Holland
This year’s basketball season was a blast! It was my first year at Delta Streets and I learned many lessons along the way that will help the team in the future. There is still a lot of growth that the program must take to be the team that it can be.

We were one win short of making the state tournament, so that is something that we definitely plan on building upon. I will miss our 3 seniors -Dameon Sanders, Chris Jones and Brian Mitchell, but I am also excited to see the leadership that this next group possesses. Dameon Sanders eclipsed 1,000 points scored in his career and Chris Jones has a tryout with MDCC coming up in March.

The team's final record was 10-17. We made it to the second round of the North State tournament and made some steps in the right direction to being the team that we want to be. The kids practiced hard, and they played hard. There are a lot of lessons we learned that I think will help the team going forward, but also lessons that will help us in life outside of basketball.
