Meet Shaquan Applewhite, New 8th Grade Student

What sports are you involved in? Basketball and football.

What are the academic requirements to play sports? An average of 70 or higher so you have to take your time and study. I couldn’t play basketball the first few games because of my grades, but now I can. I’ve played basketball since I was a kid so when my teacher said we had a test, I went home and studied.

Has DSA been different than you expected? I was kind of scared coming here because I heard about the marks. But all you have to do is stay focused, do your homework, and not get in trouble.

How do you want to improve at DSA? I want to be a B+ student. Starting in 6th grade, I started taking school more seriously and got on top of it.

Read how our board members have committed to pray for our school, students, and staff!

"My prayer is that we will continue to grow as a team, a school, a community, and mission. God is moving in the Mississippi Delta and I’m proud to invite others to move with Him." -Quiana Holmes

"My prayer for Delta Streets is that it can continue to be a light for Christ in Greenwood and throughout the Delta. For the staff to have the strength and perseverance to share Christ through the way that they teach and interact with students and families on a daily basis. For the students, I pray that their hearts are receptive and that they take advantage of the education they are receiving." -Paul Fryant

"For the students, I pray for the same thing that I pray for my own children, their salvation and spiritual growth. The Lord, through the staff at DSA, may only plant a spiritual seed while the student is at DSA. The prayer is that this seed grows and blossoms in the student's life at some point." -Stephen Edwards

"I used to pray the guys would learn how to improve in their education, their life skills, and their attitude. But now I am more deliberate to pray for their souls. I want them to see Jesus. If they don’t, we just have good boys going to college or getting a better job. All important, but not lasting. I’m praying for them to get Jesus for eternity." -Watson Pillow

An update from Gray Blocker, Director of Development

At the end of every year, I am more certain that the Lord is working through Delta Streets Academy to change the community of Greenwood. It’s truly amazing to watch our little school grow from an after-school program to the thriving campus it is today! Yes, the facilities have dramatically improved and expanded. Yes, enrollment and staff numbers continue to rise every fall. Yes, thousands more dollars pour in, supporting our increasing budget. But the most growth I’ve seen in my short five years at Delta Streets has been in the overall school culture.

When I first started working at DSA in 2018, passionate and dedicated people loved DSA’s mission, but weren’t certain how to help further that mission. Hosting the first on-campus graduation ceremony this past spring brought years of prayers to fruition. The gymnasium was packed with teachers and families beaming with pride for their graduates. For the first time, DSA felt like a “real school” to me. Of course, DSA has been a school for over a decade now, but it takes time and patience to build a school culture. We now see students proud to be called Lions and Greenwood proud of the beauty DSA brings to its downtown.

Most importantly, DSA’s culture of creating Christ-followers is expected from students, their parents, and all our staff. The community of Greenwood knows we hold students to a higher standard in academics and we prioritize a student’s spiritual development above all else. Students know what’s expected of them and we’ve watched them rise to that expectation.

People are shocked when I tell them that we’re funded by hundreds and hundreds of donors, and not from a few major gifts. Each month nearly $15,000 comes in from recurring donors, the end-of-year campaign considerably impacts our budget, and our two annual fundraisers bring incredible awareness. Everyone here at DSA strives to use these gifts wisely, and ultimately, for the glory of God! It is by His grace and mercy that the culture of Delta Streets grows stronger every year!
DSA is now set up to receive donations through stock transfer!

Please email gblocker@deltastreetsacademy.org with any questions about transferring stock.
