Meet Jakerrius Bates, Senior at DSA

How long have you been a student at DSA? What are you most excited about your senior year? I have been at DSA for six years now, and I am excited for football season to start because it’s my last year playing for the Delta Streets Lions.

What are your plans after graduation? After graduation, I plan to attend Delta State University and play football there.

How do you think DSA has shaped you into the student and young man you are today? Delta Streets has allowed me to be a great man who is ready to venture off into the adult world.

Which teacher has impacted you over the years & which class have you improved the most in? The teacher who impacted me the most was Mrs. Barth because she made sure we knew how the speak to an adult, read and write in cursive, and know our manners. The class I improved in the most was math because I would always forget how to do the problems when the test came around.

Meet Kristen Montgomery, Director of Spiritual Development

What is your position at DSA and what does your role include? I am teaching 6th grade English and 9th grade Bible. I am also the Director of Spiritual Development this year at DSA. In this role, I will be planning and coordinating the morning devotional time, as well as the mid-day devotional for the students. I will also have the opportunity to meet with guys 6th-10th grade throughout the school year to counsel and help them in their spiritual walk.

When did your family move to Greenwood and what did you do before this? My husband, Collin, and I moved to Greenwood 5 years ago and he is pastor of First Baptist Church. We have two children: Amos (4 years) and Hudson (22 months). Before coming to DSA, I worked part-time in the office of First Presbyterian Church. My educational background is in the Bible and local church ministry, so I’m really excited to use my knowledge and experience to serve the students at DSA.

List a few goals for your time with students this year.  My main goal both as a teacher and as the Director of Spiritual Development is to point the students to Jesus every chance I get. If Jesus really is who we say that He is, then He is worthy of our whole lives to be lived for Him. Delta Street's own mission statement is a great goal for me each day: to provide a "Christ-centered, disciplined education."

How do you believe DSA is making a difference in Greenwood? Far too often, we want to "help" in a quick way that makes us feel better. But true Christian ministry should be a marathon, not a sprint. Delta Streets makes quality education and Biblical training accessible to the young men who will lead our community tomorrow. These guys will be husbands, fathers, church members, laborers in the workforce, and servants in local government. The values instilled in them today will impact everyone within their reach.
Last Friday was exciting! The community had the first opportunity to see the new renovations on the school. We had students' families, volunteers, donors, government officials, and others from the community who wanted to see what has transpired over the last year. Everyone seemed to leave super encouraged. I am thankful for all those who came to the Open House and for those who helped get it ready to showcase! Now the fun part begins, using the space to carry out our mission...equipping young men through a Christ-centered, disciplined education.

The staff was able to take advantage of the new facility and organize their classrooms this week during Teacher In-Service. With four new faces, we reviewed our policies and answered any questions from our staff. We have a great team, and they are all ready to get the school year going.

Please be in prayer for our students - specifically, the 48 new students. The first few days can be a good bit to take in.

All glory be to Christ!
