Delta Streets Academy offers so many unique opportunities for its students to learn outside of the classroom. Last week our 9th and 10th graders spent a few days at Alpine Camp for Boys in Mentone, AL - rock climbing, playing paintball, and spending time outside in God’s creation. The same week, our 11th and 12th graders took a long bus ride to Washington, D.C. to visit the Capitol, the Washington Monument, Arlington Cemetery, and more!

“Alpine is always an incredible experience for young men to experience God’s beautiful country of the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. My wife Meredith, a Tennessee native, likes to constantly remind me the hills around Mississippi are not mountains! Words cannot express the experiences they have at Alpine Camp. Director Glenn Breazeale is a blessing to Delta Streets each year that he opens his doors to these young men.” -Travis Upshaw, Director of Operations

One of our goals every other year is to take the juniors and seniors to Washington D.C. so they can experience all the things that have made America what it is today...the good, the bad, and the ugly. First I have to confess that we splurged and chartered a bus to and from D.C. which made the experience much more enjoyable for everyone! Getting dropped off at a certain location and then getting picked back up at another location made it possible for us to see more things.

While bouncing around D.C. in the charter bus, we were able to meet with Representative Bennie Thompson and Representative Michael Guest. They were both extremely hospitable and opened their office to our guys. Hard to believe they make that trip every weekend back to MS. After those meetings, we had the opportunity to tour the Capitol. Our guide did a phenomenal job, but was not interested in coming to teach American History at DSA! We met with a lobbyist who opened our eyes to that side of D.C. The National Mall was fun but a ton of walking; we went to both the African American Museum as well as the Native American Museum. We saw the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the World War II Memorial, as well as Arlington Cemetery and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

The highlight for most of the guys was a Wizards/Celtics NBA game. We could definitely touch the roof of the stadium, but the guys had a blast. Each night we would travel about 25 miles (45-60 min) to Manassas, VA to stay at NorthStar Mission Center. They had plenty of bunk beds, a gym, and great breakfast provided each morning.

As I reflect back on the trip, I hope our guys were able to take in the gravity of how forward thinking our forefathers were along with the sins they committed when not adhering to the policies and documents they formed and signed. And that just like Rep. Thompson or Rep. Guest, anyone can sit in their seats if enough people from their communities elect them. And once in those seats, our congressmen and congresswomen have the opportunity for enormous impact, good or bad, for our nation.
